1.1. Introduction

It is an obligatory subject in the second term of the second year of Teaching in Infant Education. This subject aims to deliver specific training to the Infant Education teachers to be capable of detecting the first signs of delay or alteration and developing educational intervention as soon as possible, in order to prevent the appearance of secondary problems, to improve the psychosocial and educational functioning and to increase the quality of life of the children and their families.

 

Further information regarding the course will be provided on the first day of class.

2.1. Learning goals

The student, to be able to pass the subject, will have to demonstrate the following results:
1. Understanding the origins and how the physical, sensory and intellectual or developmental disabilities affect the learning processes and development of the children who have them.
2. Knowing the main instruments of early detection of developmental delays and alterations.
3. Analysing the educational needs related to the different disorders in the early stages of development.
4. Knowing programmes and strategies for educational intervention for children with different developmental disorders.
5. Understanding the vital cycle of the family with children who present developmental disorders, as well as the most suitable strategies for family intervention.
6. Knows the channels for inter-institutional and inter-professional coordination.

5.1. Methodological overview

The methodology followed in this course is oriented towards achievement of the learning objectives. It is based on active participation, case studies, teamwork etc. that favors the development of communicative skills and critical thinking.

5.2. Learning tasks

The course includes 6 ECTS organized according to:
- Lectures (1.2 ECTS): 30 hours.
- Practice sessions (0.8 ECTS): 20 hours.
- Autonomous work (3.2 ECTS): 80 hours.
- Tutorials (0.5 ECTS): 12.5 hours.
- Assessment (0.3 ECTS): 7.5 hours.

 

Lectures: the professor presents theoretical contents.
Practice sessions: they can involve discussion and presentation of case studies, practical work outside the classroom (field work or visits), and seminars.
Autonomous work: students do tasks such as autonomous study, reading of the course book, preparation of practice sessions and seminars, and summative assignments.
Tutorials: professors' office hours can be used to solved doubts and to follow-up students’ work.
Assessment: final examination
